How to Prepare for Your First Pap Smear

Making the appointment is simple, but walking into the doctor’s office your first Pap smear can feel a little unnerving. Know that it’s completely normal to feel unsure about what’s ahead.

At Yorktown Health in Lombard, Lisle, and Vernon Hills, Illinois, we’re here to help make the experience feel less intimidating so you can attend your appointment with ease. Just a little preparation and the right support can make your first Pap smear a breeze.

Here’s how to prepare for your first Pap smear, both physically and emotionally.

Why Pap smears are important

A Pap smear is a simple test that checks for abnormal changes in cervical cells that could lead to cervical cancer. Early detection saves lives, so even if you feel perfectly healthy, regular screenings are essential.

Generally, women should begin Pap smear screenings at age 21, regardless of sexual activity. If your results are normal, you generally only need one every three years.

How to prepare for your appointment

Try to book your Pap smear when you’re not on your period, as heavy bleeding can affect the accuracy of the test. Ideally, schedule it for about 10-20 days after the start of your last period.
For about 48 hours before your exam, skip the use of:

  • Douches (not recommended at any time)
  • Vaginal creams or suppositories
  • Intercourse
  • Tampons

These can interfere with the results by washing away or obscuring cervical cells.

We ask you to undress from the waist down and give you a gown or drape for modesty. Wearing a skirt or loose pants may make the process feel a bit easier.

This is your time. Feel free to ask your provider anything — from what the procedure involves to how long results take. A good provider will always create space for your concerns.

What to expect during the Pap smear

You lie on an exam table with your feet in footrests or stirrups. A skilled member of our team gently inserts a speculum into your vagina to make it easier for us to see your cervix. We collect a small sample of cells using a soft brush or spatula. The entire process takes just a few minutes.

It may feel slightly uncomfortable or cause a bit of pressure, but it shouldn’t be painful. Communicate openly with us if anything feels off.

After the test

Most women return to their day with no issues. You might have very light spotting, which is normal. Results usually come back within a week or two. If anything is abnormal, we walk you through any next steps with clarity and care.

Feeling nervous about your first Pap smear is completely normal. Our team is here to make sure you feel safe, informed, and empowered.
